A Health Update

May 22, 2010

Some of you who follow our prayer blog (lanserprayers.wordpress.com) know that David hasn’t been feeling the greatest lately. The latest round started a little over a week ago with an ear infection. A day or two after David was diagnosed with an ear infection he came down with a cold. Then a few days ago David woke up a rather nasty looking rash. We took him to the doctor who thought it was probably either a virus or an allergic reaction. Many people have allergies to mango sap, leaves, pollen or skin that can cause a rash, similar to poison ivy. David had played with a mango the day before the rash appeared so we knew that might be a possibility. The doctor said it wasn’t anything to worry about. But the next morning the rash looked different and by noon we noticed that David hadn’t peed in 6 hours and his hands and feet were swelling and was starting to act sick. We called the Doctor again to make sure the changes weren’t something we should be worried about and he said he’d like to see David again to make sure. He also ordered some blood tests. It was a pretty tense time as we waited for the blood tests-David’s rash kept changing and it looked like he had numerous bruises and he was getting more lethargic, I was getting pretty worried it was going to be something serious. However, as we were talking to the doctor about the blood tests (which were normal or close to normal) David suddenly starting acting himself again. The doctor still thinks it’s either a virus or an odd allergic reaction (possibly to mangoes or his medication for his ear infection) so we stopped the antibiotics (his ears looked great) and started him on a couple allergy medications. David already is doing much better, he’s peeing and eating again and acting like the happy, inquisitive little boy we’re use to having around. The rash is quickly diminishing and it is almost completely cleared up. We’re so thankful that David is doing so much better and that all this happened in Jos, where we had access to a helpful, knowledgeable and caring pediatrician.

We’ve ventured into the strange and wonderful world of toddler cooking.

First with Navajo Fry Bread…

and today we tried Pancakes…

opps, it’s been a little while since I posted pictures…

(Mom, sorry it’s taken so long to post this, but I thought you, and others, might like to see it.)

I forgot to bring out a birthday present for David and instead of attempting to find one that’s not too overpriced here I decided to make him a birthday present, using only the materials I could find in our house…

My Life in Africa

We had to fly in an airplane from the U.S. to Africa
Can you fly the airplane?

Nigerian Driving
Can you drive the car from house to house?
Oops, the bridge is broken

Laundry Time
Can you hang the clothes on the line?
Can you put the clothes in the basket?

How We Get Water
Rain
– Can you make it rain?
Borehole -Can you work the pump?

We sleep under nets to keep the bugs off us
Can you tie the rope onto the mosquito net?

The Lord will keep you from all harm-he will watch over your life, the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.  -Psalm 121:7-8

welcome back, happy baby

Sick Baby

February 27, 2010

Earlier this week we noticed David was starting to feel really warm, but thought it was either a low-grade teething fever or just because it’s been hot here.  After a couple days it wasn’t getting any better.  His fever had increased and he was starting to act a lot more clingy and lethargic so Gremar checked his ears and confirmed he had an ear infection.  So we started him on antibiotics. We also decided to put him on Malaria medicine.  That was yesterday. Today he seems to be improving, his fever was pretty low all day and he was afebrile last night.  He had a little more energy today, but was still pretty clingy.  We’ve been pretty blessed, he has continued to eat and drink through all this and seems to be getting better with medication.
